Safe Pet Ontario

SafePet Ontario is a women-led organization supporting individuals fleeing violence and their pets. Recognizing the link between human violence and animal abuse, SafePet Ontario provides public education and a foster-based pet-safekeeping program for victims of abuse.

Nearly half of abuse victims delay leaving their abuser, or do not leave at all, if they cannot bring their pet. Since most shelters do not accept pets, 60% of pet owners escaping abuse are forced to leave their pet behind, with some even returning to protect their animals.

SafePet Ontario fills this critical gap by offering pet-safekeeping for survivors of family violence and human trafficking. By ensuring pets are safe, survivors can seek support and secure housing sooner.

Under Program Manager Chelsey Alderson’s leadership, SafePet Ontario has significantly expanded its reach, with more growth expected in 2024. Learn how you can get involved and support this vital cause!
