Nearly half of domestic abuse survivors delay or avoid leaving dangerous situations if they can’t bring their pets with them. With most shelters unable to accept pets, families face a heartbreaking choice. SafePet Ontario, a grassroots charity, addresses this gap through a foster-based pet safekeeping program, allowing victims of violence to seek refuge without leaving their pets behind. Since 2017, the program has helped hundreds of families, challenging the traditional approach to safety planning by including pets.
