Maria Papaioannoy

“Co-Founder of NEW “

Maria Papaioannoy Duic, after living in Toronto her entire life, moved with her husband to Northumberland in 2016, settling in the town of Cobourg. She is a proud graduate of Centennial College’s Radio and Television program, class of 2000.

From 1997 to 2004, Maria freelanced as an on-air reporter with OMNI television, earning several producer credits along the way. In 2013, she embraced entrepreneurship, and since then, she and her husband have embarked on various ventures. In 2019, she joined the board of the Port Hope and District Chamber of Commerce and became its President in 2021.

As the founder and spokesperson for Canada’s largest consumer movement for Tobacco Harm Reduction (Rights 4 Vapers), Maria even registered as a third party during the last federal election to shake things up, advocating to ensure the voices of end users are heard in the regulatory process.

In 2020, Maria joined Cobourg Toastmasters to enhance her speaking skills, winning her area speaking contest twice and placing 2nd in Division. She currently serves as the President of Cobourg Toastmasters.

In 2022, Maria launched Northumberland Women, and earlier this year, she expanded her reach by starting a second weekly show, Northumberland at 5, which airs every Wednesday at 5 pm. Both shows are broadcast on Northumberland 89.7. Through these platforms, Maria aims to meet and be inspired by others in the community.

Maria is also the co-founder of the Northumberland Expo for Women (NEW), which was established in 2023. This passion project is close to her heart, driven by her belief that women have, for far too long, quietly broken down barriers and deserve to be celebrated. Through NEW, Maria is committed to shining a light on these incredible women and their achievements.
